Schulze works in glass because he believes it is the medium that hosts the most brilliant and richest colors possible. He employs a color technique that involves layers of different transparent colors over opaque design patterns. This produces a rich, subtly complex background upon which he picks up hot twisted cane and fuses together the layers. The result is the flowing effect that you see in Commitment. For this piece, he chose to echo the typical Spanish Renaissance motif of the arches used in the façade of the building.
