The Believers, 2009

Jack Stevens

American
Bronze

The Believers was Jack Stevens’s final sculpture. It was commissioned by the Dillard family, long-time philanthropists in Wichita Falls. The sculpture was cast in bronze using the lost wax method of casting. The commission began in January 2007 and was delivered to MSU Texas in March 2009.

The statue consists of three mustangs that represent strength, courage, and wisdom. The statues are situated in an area of campus with the most intense sunlight, and although this is not confirmed, it was possibly situated there to show the hardiness needed to maintain strength, courage, and wisdom.

Stevens stated that he was thankful for the opportunity to create a sculpture of mustangs, as it was one of his favorite subjects. His work on these mustangs brought back great memories of horses that he knew in his lifetime. As he stated, “not only good working ranch horses, but also the great bucking horses that he’s ridden and been bucked off of.”
