Man Giving Birds to the Sky, 2001

Edward Povey

American
Bronze

The focus of Povey’s work is the human figure: the icon of all human concerns, reappearing throughout the history of art. The figure in this sculpture is walking with his head pointed to the sky, while his hands are held up, releasing birds. For the artist, this work is a symbol of supreme confidence and vision. The birds are symbols of generosity and gratitude. The head of the figure was inspired by the heads painted by Picasso in the 1920s.
